What is Epilepsy ?

Epilepsy is a central nervous system (neurological) disorder in which the activity of the brain becomes abnormal, causing seizures or periods of unusual behavior, sensations, and sometimes loss of awareness. It can be developed in any age of the people and can be affected in both males and females. Some people with epilepsy simply exhibit the symptom like staring blankly for a few seconds during a seizure, while others repeatedly twitch their arms or legs. Having a single seizure doesn't mean you have epilepsy. At least two unprovoked seizures are generally required for an epilepsy diagnosis.

Epileptic seizures can vary from person to person. Some get noticed at the last a few seconds and, sometimes it affect only one arm or one leg, whereas others affect the whole body is affected. Sometimes people become unconscious, and are mentally absent for a short while, and in some cases they remain fully conscious.

Epileptic seizures do not usually last very long. If a seizure lasts longer than five minutes, it is referred to as 'status epilepticus.' This is a medical emergency requiring immediate treatment for Epilepsy in Hyderabad with medication. People may also have several seizures within a short space of time.

There are two main categories of epileptic seizures:
  • Generalized seizures.
  • Partial (focal) seizures.

Symptoms

Seizure symptoms can vary widely.

Because epilepsy is caused by abnormal activity in the brain, seizures can affect any process that your brain coordinates. Seizure signs and symptoms may include:

  1. Temporary confusion
  2. A staring spell
  3. Uncontrollable jerking movements of the arms and legs
  4. Loss of consciousness or awareness
  5. Psychic symptoms such as fear, anxiety

Symptoms vary depending on the type of seizure. In most cases, a person with epilepsy will tend to have the same type of seizure each time, so the symptoms will be similar. Epilepsy has no identifiable cause in about half the people with the condition. In the other half, the condition may be traced to various factors, including:

Causes of Epilepsy

Genetic influence: Some types of epilepsy, which are categorized by the type of seizure you experience or the part of the brain that is affected. but for most people, genes are only part of the cause of epilepsy.

  1. Head trauma: Head trauma as a result of a accident or other traumatic injury which can lead to epilepsy.
  2. Brain conditions: Brain conditions that cause damage to the brain, such as brain tumors or strokes, can cause epilepsy. Stroke is a leading cause of epilepsy in adults.
  3. Infectious diseases: Infectious diseases, such as meningitis, AIDS and viral encephalitis, can cause epilepsy.
  4. Prenatal injury: Before birth, babies are sensitive to brain damage that could be caused by several factors, such as an infection in the mother, poor nutrition or oxygen deficiencies. This brain damage can result in epilepsy or cerebral palsy.
  5. Developmental disorders: Epilepsy can sometimes be associated with developmental disorders, such as autism and neurofibromatosis.

Epilepsy treatment in Kukatpally with medications or sometimes surgery can control seizures for the majority of people with epilepsy. Some people require lifelong treatment to control seizures, but for others, the seizures eventually go away. Some children with epilepsy may outgrow the condition with age.

After getting diagnosed by epilepsy doctors in Hyderabad, you have several options to go through the treatment at Best Neurology Hospital in KPHB colony. Medication, a special diet, an implant that works on your nerves and surgery could all help you feel better.

Seizure Medication

Epilepsy medications, sometimes called anti-seizure or anticonvulsant medications, change the way your brain cells work and send messages to each other.

The kind of medication your Neurologist in Hyderabad suggests depends on a few things:

  1. The type of seizures you have.
  2. How likely it is you’ll have more seizures.
  3. Your age.
  4. Your sex.
  5. Other medical conditions you have.
  6. If you want to get pregnant.

Epilepsy is a brain disorder that causes repeated episodes of unprovoked seizures. Epilepsy is almost always treated first with medication. Choosing the right one, however, can be challenging. The ultimate goal of treatment is to establish control and be free from seizures. But sometimes, even after the control people may still have a seizure, often referred to as a breakthrough seizure.

Paralysis is a condition for the patients who have damage in the nervous system, especially in the spinal cord. A person with paralysis experiences loss of muscle function and sensations in the affected part.
